Amazon Return Package Scam Allegedly Cost The Company $370K

A scam ran by a 22-year old allegedly totaled $370K by returning packages to Amazon filled with dirt while keeping the original item and selling it online.

James Gilbert Kwarteng, of Palma de Mallorca, Spain, pulled a fast one on Amazon by first getting the exact weight of the product he received and then proceeding to fill up the package with the exact same amount of dirt, collecting a refund and sending the box back to Amazon.

The package would end up sitting around an Amazon warehouse as the company rarely checks returned items. A single package was discovered during a random search which prompted further investigation by Amazon and the scam identified.

The scam was so successful, Kwarteng created his own company based on the ruse. He has recently been released on bail.
